March - May 2015
If the large Herring spawns that we have been witnessing in Clayoquot Sound this spring are any indication of the season to come, spirits should be high. After nearly two decades of small pocket spawns we are finally starting to witness a rebound in this important prey species. Recent sightings of large spawning schools off of Flores Island and Syndey Inlet are a source for optimism on the West Coast.Further offshore Needle Fish are congregating behind the drop-off at the Portland Point tack, drawing in passing Chinook Salmon heading south towards the Columbia River and points south. During the spring we focus a considerable amount of our angling effort to this zone. To date this season the Portland tack has produce some great Chinook or Spring Salmon for our guests. Sizes during March range in the 10-20 pound range and we expect to see a gradual increase in size as the spring progress.
Also in the offshore waters Halibut season is now open. As the Abundance Forecasts are similar to last season, recreational limits are the same as last year at 1 per day and 2 in possesion. Size limits also remain the same, maximum size 133cm (70lb ish) for one and a 90cm max (20lb ish) for the second. Lingcod fishing opens on the 1st of April, however Rockfish are open year round.
In the calm waters of the sound, the Dungeness Crab fishing has been excellent as of late. Have Trilogy Fish Company steam them up for a great post trip meal. Recreational Spot Prawn season is at its prime during March and April. Come get your Spot Prawns before the commercial opening begins in mid-May. Spot Prawns are a terrific local product and can be enjoyed seared, deep fried or raw. Enjoy them on their own or beside your favourite cut of meat.
If you are looking for an adventure, try our freshwater float trip. Head into the wilderness aboard the Tofino Air Beaver and spend the day in the remote rainforest of Strathcona Park.
Additional Freshwater options may be available, including Steelhead flyfishing trips.
Please contact us for further information. Early season rates are available for saltwater charters.
